DR. SYNTAX CLEWS TRANSFERWARE PLATE 1825

This 8-3/4" plate is from the delightful Dr. Syntax Series that was made in Staffordshire by the Clews factory around 1825. What makes this plate particularly interesting is the backstamp which has the name of the importer--J.Greenfield, China Store, No. 77 Pearl Street, New York. The pattern name is "Dr. Syntax Return'd From His Tour". Condition of the plate is excellent.

It is 20" from handle to handle, 9" high and 14" wide. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or restoration. It is rare to find a dark blue footbath from the 1820s. Take a look at all of the photos for the details. I use the footbath to hold newpapers and magazine. It also looks lovely filled with plants and flowers.

Unusual Coffee Pot

The 11-1/2" pearlware coffee pot has a most unusual design. It has mermen with wings, otters, swans, and Pegasus who is printed under the spout. I don't know what the symbolism means but it is interesting! There is a crack in the lid which doesn't show when the lid is on the pot and a possible repair to the tip of the spout. This sounds terrible but the coffee pot shows extremely well. The age of this Staffordshire piece is around 1825.
